Media professional Ray Collins remembers a moment in an early session of Gulf Coast Leadership Institute when fellow participants Jeff McGrath and Don Hall were debating a point across the room. “Here was an international businessman in his fifties and a twenty-something director of a local grassroots nonprofit, thoughtfully and passionately making their points,” said Collins. “Their eyes were locked and they were fully engaged, each listening to what the other had to say with complete respect. I leaned over to the person next to me and said, ‘This is why I love this program!’”

Collins, McGrath, and Hall were among 24 individuals from across the region who came together to hone their skills in communication, group decision-making, and other leadership abilities in the 2011 Gulf Coast Leadership Institute. The group completed the three-month leadership-development program and celebrated their graduation late last month at Venetian Golf and River Club in North Venice.

“With the important issues in our region needing civil discourse and all sides to be heard, Gulf Coast applauds these leaders as they reach out into the community to make a positive difference,” said Teri A Hansen, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Community Foundation, which created and funds Gulf Coast Leadership Institute. Gulf Coast provided all training and resources at no cost to the selected participants in exchange for their commitment to use their new skills for the long-term benefit of the community.

Participants in this year’s class met for seven sessions from May to July. Through experiential small- and large-group activities, they gained knowledge and skills in areas such as managing conflict, building communities through collaboration, and leading community change. Lora Kosten, PhD, faculty coordinator at USF Sarasota-Manatee at North Port, said, “The Gulf Coast Leadership Institute was the highlight of my summer work. The workshop series helped expand my repertoire of knowledge and inspired me to become involved in community projects. In addition, a special bond was formed among the participants, and this camaraderie holds unlimited potential for the future.”

For Danette Bartolotta, vice president of ROI Media, completing the Gulf Coast Leadership Institute meant joining the ranks of dozens of other North Port community members who have gone through the same training. Gulf Coast Leadership Institute grew out of two successful North Port Leadership Institute classes offered by the foundation in 2006 and 2007. “I have been very fortunate in my experience to work with many of the graduates from this leadership program,” said Bartolotta. “I know I can communicate and collaborate with them on a new level. I am so grateful to join the alumni of this program and hope that one day in the future I will offer the same type of leadership inspiration to others as they have offered me.”

The course was designed and facilitated by faculty from the University of Georgia’s Fanning Institute, which is recognized nationally for its leadership, community, and economic development programs. Since 2006, nearly 150 community members have participated in leadership training commissioned by Gulf Coast and led by the Fanning Institute.

ROI Media’s CEO Adam Bartolotta will be closing the conference with a presentation on How to Create a Strategic Marketing Plan. With the fast-paced changing world of technology, the Florida Government Communicators Association is bringing the concept of “Geek” to a whole new level of understanding.

FGCA’s 2011 Annual Conference will be from Thursday, July 28, 2011 through Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Lido Beach Resort in beautiful Sarasota County.

This year’s theme is “Get Your Geek On.” With app technology, mobile devices, and a completely changing internet landscape, our world is definitely bringing out the “geek” in all of us.

“We are very excited about this year’s conference and our theme. For government communicators – and for marketing professionals everywhere – this is a very timely topic as we look for ways to best reach our audience,” said Crystal Pruitt, FGCA president and Communications Manager with Sarasota County Government.

Since 1989, the Florida Government Communicators Association has been the premier communication organization for those involved in governments, special districts, and other public communication roles.

Dollar for dollar, the FGCA Conference is the most valuable conference for local government and allied agency communicators. Attendees learn and share best practices from communications professionals in both the public and private sectors and also gain invaluable networking with peers, as well as access to conference materials at the conference.

The 2011 Annual Conference will begin at noon on Thursday, July 28, 2011 with a lunch, keynote speaker, and afternoon breakout sessions. That evening, the conference will include a social and a Restaurant Romp to encourage the broadening of personal networks. On Friday, the conference will extend a full day and include breakfast, lunch, and breakout sessions throughout the day.

Breakout sessions will include a number of timely topics, including branding your agency or community; developing strategic marketing plans; using free internet tools to help you reach your audience; using enhanced technology to further your reach, such as QR Codes, apps, and other mobile technology; and much more.

FGCA members are invited to register for the conference for $199. The registration includes lunch and snacks on Thursday and breakfast, lunch, and snacks on Friday.

Adam Bartolotta, CEO of ROI Media and publisher of North Port Magazine, began working in the field of graphic design at the age of fifteen, as a graphic artist with YOU Magazine, where he designed ads, created graphics and assembled the entire publication. At the age of 20, Adam became the youngest person ever to hold an copy editor position at the Venice Gondolier. Adam won several awards from the Florida Press Association, including Second Place in Overall Graphic Design and Third Place in General Excellence. At the age of 23, Adam became Senior Art Director for Polart in Sarasota, where he designed catalogues, ads and clothing, and worked on the company’s web site.

By the time he was 24, Adam had the highest number of five-star reviews worldwide on eLance, the world’s largest online professional marketplace, and was awarded more projects than any other provider. He worked with hundreds of companies worldwide, servicing clients in Peru, London, France, Japan, Australia, Africa and other countries, as well as most states in the US. The toll of working on so many time zones was very hard on his family, so Adam decided it was time to focus on the community he lives in.

By the time he turned 28, he was awarded the Enterprise Charlotte & Charlotte County Economic Development Entrepreneurship Award. He was nominated for North Port’s Business of the Year in 2007, 2008 and was awarded Medium Sized Business of the Year in 2009. He was also featured as 25 People to Watch by Biz941 Magazine in 2010.

Adam has worked with hundreds of local, regional and national organizations and businesses and assisted in branding and marketing their communities and organizations. This includes, but is not limited to, the City of North Port, Charlotte County Government, Charlotte Community Foundation, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, the Southwest Florida International Air Show, the North Port High School Athletic Boosters Club, the Charlotte County Sheriffs Department, the Healthy Start Coalition of Sarasota, United Way of South Sarasota County, Vision North Port, the American Red Cross, Oberto Redfish Tournament, Domestic Abuse Shelter Homes, the Salvation Army, Senior Friendship Centers, the North Port Art Center, the Women’s Resource Center of Sarasota County, and many others. Adam has worked with these organizations to suggest media placement and offer strategic marketing guidance, as well as image design and implementation. He always participates at the career conference at Heron Creek Middle School, where he explains marketing, publishing, photography, graphic design, websites and other media services to students. Adam is a true testimonial to the fact that if you put your mind to it, there’s nothing you cannot do. These children are just below the age Adam was at when he started in this field, and he hopes that he can show them that hard work does make dreams come true.

Adam was a cofounder of the North Port Business Club, and cofounder of the Charlotte Area Business Alliance (CABA). He was responsible for recruiting over 75 members in less than six months, bringing the organization total to over 100 members. He was instrumental in the merging of CABA with the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce. He serves as Past Chair of the North Port Young Professionals, Board Member with the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce PR Committee and as a USF Advisory Board Member.

He has published over 200 magazines locally in SW Florida. His firm has completed hundreds of logos, direct mail campaigns, web sites, ads, radio commercials, TV commercials, jingles, marketing plans, corporate ID kits, and other materials.

He has hundreds of excellent reviews and satisfied clients all over the globe. He continues to support local organizations in their endeavours. His agency has dramatically changed the overall image of North Port over the years and continues to create an upscale image for the city his family calls home.
